How to use KML files
introduction to KML files
What is a KML file? (nerd version)
Keyhole Markup Language (KML) is an XML notation for expressing geographic annotation and visualization within Internet-based, two-dimensional maps and three-dimensional Earth browsers. KML was developed for use with Google Earth, which was originally named Keyhole Earth Viewer. It was created by Keyhole, Inc, which was acquired by Google in 2004. KML became an international standard of the Open Geospatial Consortium in 2008. Google Earth was the first program able to view and graphically edit KML files.
What is a KML file? (human version)
It's a file that can be opened by Google Earth to view our road trips. It can also be converted to a GPS data file.
How can I see a road trip with this stuff?
It's easy, just follow these steps:
1) download Google Earth, and install it on your computer
2) download a KML file from on of our road trips
3) double click on the downloaded kml file to open it with Google Earth or open it directly from the Google Earth "File" menu
My GPS doesn't speak KML
Thats normal, a GPS can't read KML files. However, you can convert a KML file to any sort of GPS data file with GPSBabel software. You can download it for free!
